About Sustainability
City of Lakewood Sustainable Neighborhoods Program
The City of Lakewood, Colorado Sustainable Neighborhoods Program gives residents the opportunity to become active partners in making Lakewood a vibrant and sustainable community. Neighborhoods participating in this unique certification program use guidance from City staff to organize workshops, projects and events that enhance the livability of their neighborhood and reduce residents' ecological footprint. Participating neighborhoods earn program credits for their efforts and, depending on the number of credits earned in a given year, they may receive City designation as a “Participating Sustainable Neighborhood” or an “Outstanding Sustainable Neighborhood” from the City.
Program participation can enhance the environmental and social strength of a neighborhood while demonstrating commitment to sustainability in Lakewood. In addition, the participation benefits may include recognition from City Council, neighborhood signage, education and an increased sense of community There are currently eight participating neighborhoods in the program; Applewood, Belmar, Eiber, Green Mountain, Lake Lochwood Village, Morse Park, South of 6th and Southern Gables.

SUSTAINABILITY IN THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD
Sustainability means creating balance among the environment, the economy and society to ensure that practices and decisions do not compromise the quality of life for future generations. Sustainability is not an end goal, but an approach that recognizes the interplay between natural, economic and social interests. This approach has been part of Lakewood’s community fabric since its inception in 1969. As Lakewood celebrates its 50th Anniversary, it is a great time to celebrate the steps we’ve taken to become a sustainable community and take action to ensure that we are preserving the Lakewood we love for our kids.
The Sustainability Plan Annual Report 2018 – 2019 highlights the key implementation efforts undertaken this year and reports on progress made toward achieving the community’s sustainability goals that were set in the City of Lakewood’s first communitywide Sustainability Plan, adopted in May 2015. Additionally, this report includes a comprehensive compilation of data in support of the Sustainability Plan’s 35 measurable targets and 90 sustainability indicators and a progress report on the status of the plan’s primary implementation strategies.

So many innovative and exciting initiatives are underway, but we still have a lot of work to do! Thank you for staying committed to making Lakewood a more sustainable community.
BEing greener – one day at a time!
They say it’s ‘not easy being green’ – but it sure is a lot of fun when you do it with neighbors and everyone pitches in! The Sustainable Neighborhoods Program (SNP) aims to support citizens in ‘greening’ their own neighborhood. The City of Lakewood originated the SNP and it has won national awards, been adopted by other local municipalities (e.g. Denver) - and even had international interest in it. . And did you know that Eiber was the first ‘Outstanding Sustainable Neighborhood’ EVER. (Pretty cool, huh?) The program requires that activities (such as workshops and community projects) be carried out annually that make the neighborhood more sustainable. These activities relate to five (5) broad areas: Air, Energy, Water, People, Land.
Projects have included:
Eiber Elementary School Community Garden
Eiber / Morse Park Resilience Circle
Neighborhood Heritage
Land Stewardship and Native Landscaping
Literacy Outreach Program
Bike Eiber / Bike the West Corridor
